What is a pendle axle low loader? A pendle axle low loader (also called a pendular axle low loader) is a specialist heavy haulage trailer fitted with self-steering pendular axles. The axles pivot passively in response to cornering forces, dramatically reducing the turning circle and tyre scrub compared to fixed-axle equivalents. Pendular axle geometry allows the wheel assembly to swing laterally around a central pivot. No active hydraulic steering is required — the geometry is purely passive, which simplifies maintenance.

What is the load capacity of the STU pendle axle low loader? The STU double extension pendle axle low loader is engineered for 80 to 120 ton payloads depending on the specific configuration, axle count, and the permit conditions applicable to the route. MC700 steel (700 MPa minimum yield strength) enables a significantly lighter frame than ST52 equivalents while achieving higher load ratings.

What is double extension on a low loader? Double extension means the deck platform extends in two stages telescopically. The first extension stage adds length for medium oversized loads; the second stage adds further length for abnormal long loads such as wind turbine components, bridge sections, and long structural steel. Telescopic beams are manufactured from MC700 steel to maintain platform rigidity at full extension.

What is a detachable gooseneck and why is it useful? A detachable gooseneck is a removable front section that connects the low loader deck to the fifth wheel coupling. When detached, the deck rests at ground level for front-end loading without a crane. The gooseneck connects via a hydraulically operated locking mechanism, controlled from ground level.

Why use MC700 steel instead of standard ST52? MC700 offers 700 MPa minimum yield strength compared to approximately 355 MPa for standard ST52 steel. This allows the frame to be up to 30% lighter for an equivalent load rating. MC700 is a thermomechanically rolled high-strength steel. Its superior strength-to-weight ratio also improves fatigue life.

Can the low loader be customised for specific loads? Yes. STU TRAILERS® builds low loaders to customer specification. Key configurable parameters include deck width, extension stages, axle count, ramp type, hydraulic options, surface finish and RAL colour. Custom builds are engineered individually.
