Plan excavator transport using the complete combination: machine dimensions, deck height, gross weight and axle loads. Understand when route limits require authorisation and how trailer specifications affect the calculation.

Planning an excavator transport in Europe requires the machine's transport dimensions and weight, the trailer deck height, the laden combination weight and the load on each axle group. Add the deck height to the machine height to calculate the travelling height. Check height, width, length, gross weight and axle loads against the rules for every country on the route. An authorisation may be required wherever the applicable limits are exceeded.

The short answer


Machine weight alone cannot establish whether a journey needs a permit. A lowbed with three axles may have enough structural capacity for a machine while the loaded combination exceeds the permitted gross weight, axle loads or dimensions. Calculate the complete combination before selecting the trailer; an 800 mm deck leaves 3.2 metres for machine height under a 4 metre limit, before any additional supports.

Start with the machine, not the trailer


Every specification conversation should open with four figures from the machine's own data sheet: transport weight, transport height, transport width and track width or wheelbase. Transport weight is not operating weight. Removing the bucket, counterweight or boom section changes it, sometimes by several tonnes. Transport height is measured with the boom lowered to its travel position, and manufacturers publish this figure precisely because it decides road legality.

Get these four numbers before anyone quotes you a trailer. A request for a trailer without them usually produces a unit that is either overbuilt for the work or short of capacity on the heaviest job. If you are still deciding between a lowbed and a low loader, the two terms describe the same trailer family in most European markets, and the specifications below matter far more than the name.

The EU baseline: Directive 96/53/EC


Weight


Under Annex I of Directive 96/53/EC, 40 tonnes is the baseline gross limit for the specified articulated combinations with five or six axles. Qualifying intermodal operations can use 42 or 44 tonnes depending on axle configuration and the applicable conditions. These are combination weights, not payloads. Deduct the actual operating weight of the tractor and trailer to calculate the remaining payload, then check axle loads and the rules for the route.

Axle loads matter as much as gross weight. The baseline is 10 tonnes on a single axle without drive and 11.5 tonnes on a driving axle, with tandem and tridem groups governed by their own tables and by axle spacing. A combination can be under 40 tonnes gross and still be illegal because one axle group is overloaded.

Height


Four metres is the standard maximum travelling height in most member states. This is the figure that makes lowbeds exist: a machine standing 3.2 metres tall cannot travel on a standard flatbed with a deck height of 1.4 metres, but sits comfortably on a lowbed deck at 800 millimetres.

National practice varies more than the directive suggests. Some states apply a lower working limit, others have no statutory height limit at all and rely on bridge and tunnel signage instead. Confirm the figure for every country on the route rather than assuming four metres everywhere.

Width and length


Standard maximum width is 2.55 metres, and 2.60 metres for bodies with temperature control. Maximum length for an articulated combination is 16.50 metres. Tracked machines are frequently wider than 2.55 metres, which means a machine that is legal on weight and height can still require a permit on width alone.

What changes when you exceed a limit


Once any dimension or weight goes beyond the baseline, the transport becomes an abnormal load and needs authorisation from each national authority on the route. Permit systems differ substantially between countries: some issue authorisations for a single journey, others offer annual or permits for a specific route, and requirements for escort vehicles, movement windows and notification periods vary widely.

Practical consequences are what matter for planning. Permits take time, sometimes weeks for the heaviest categories. Routes get dictated to you rather than chosen. Night or weekend movement restrictions apply in many jurisdictions. Escort vehicles add cost per journey. For an operator running the same machines repeatedly, the arithmetic often favours specifying a trailer that keeps the load legal over paying permit and escort costs on every trip.

How deck height decides your legal height


Deck height is not a single fixed number. It moves with tyre size, suspension type and deck construction. On STU lowbeds the working range typically sits between 750 and 900 millimetres, and every 50 millimetres you save is 50 millimetres of machine height you can carry.

Work backwards from the limit. Take 4 metres, subtract your tallest machine's transport height, and the remainder is the maximum deck height you can accept. If a machine stands 3.3 metres, you need a deck at or below 700 millimetres, which pushes the specification towards smaller tyres, a lower suspension setting or a deeper drop in the main beam. If the machine stands 3.0 metres, a 900 millimetre deck is comfortable and you can specify for durability instead.

Matching axle count to machine weight


Axles carry payload and distribute it across the road surface. As a working guide for excavator transport: two axles suit machines up to roughly 30 tonnes, three axles cover the range from 30 to 45 tonnes that includes most tracked excavators and wheel loaders, four axles handle 45 to 70 tonnes, and five to eight axles are specified above that for the largest machines, cranes and transformers.

These are structural guidelines, not legal ones. The binding constraint is usually the axle load limit on your specific route, not the trailer's capacity. A trailer with three axles that carries 45 tonnes structurally may still need a fourth axle to stay within national limits on a particular corridor, or a configuration with self steering axles to satisfy turning requirements.

Loading and securing


Loading an excavator is where most damage and most incidents happen. Hydraulic ramps handle it on prepared ground. On unprepared ground, a detachable or hydraulic gooseneck lets the machine drive on from the front at a much shallower approach angle, which matters for tracked equipment with little ground clearance, where the belly or counterweight can ground out on a steep ramp.

Securing is governed by EN 12195, which sets out how to calculate the restraint needed in each direction based on the load's mass and the friction between machine tracks and deck. In practice this means enough lashing points of adequate rated capacity, positioned so that chains pull at the intended angles. STU lowbeds are supplied with eight lashing rings rated at 16 tonnes per side as standard, which gives the flexibility to secure machines of very different geometries without improvising.

Tracks and blades should be chocked, the boom lowered and rested, hydraulics locked, and the machine's own travel lock engaged where fitted. The load securing calculation assumes all of this is done.

What catches operators out


Three things, repeatedly. First, using operating weight instead of transport weight and discovering the difference at a weighbridge. Second, assuming that legal in the country of departure means legal throughout the route, when height limits, axle rules and permit thresholds all vary. Third, specifying a trailer around the machine currently owned rather than the machine likely to be bought next, then paying for permits for the rest of the trailer's life.

Planning a compliant transport


Collect the four machine figures from the data sheet. Add trailer deck height to machine transport height and check the total against the lowest limit on the route. Check gross combination weight and each axle group against national limits for every country crossed. Where any figure exceeds a limit, start the permit process early and build the lead time into the schedule. Where figures sit close to a limit, treat the margin as the specification target rather than an acceptable risk.

Does removing the bucket help?


Often significantly. Removing the bucket, and on larger machines the counterweight, reduces both transport weight and sometimes transport height, and can be the difference between a standard movement and a permit application. Is it cheaper to buy a bigger trailer or pay for permits?


It depends on frequency. For occasional oversize movements, permits are cheaper. For an operator moving the same machines weekly, the cumulative cost of permits, escorts and route restrictions usually exceeds the price difference between a unit with 3 axles and one with 4 axles within the first two or three years.
